Subject: GOOD USE FOR DIGITAL CAMERA

We have all had the experience of needing to buy a service manual,
just to get the part number of the $1.00 part we need to complete a repair.

2 shipping charges.
extra waight
extra cost
THAT HURTS!

Do you remember when you first started to yse a fax
in your shop.... How handy it was to get an exploded view
of a parts list sent to you....
AND HOW PISSED OFF YOU WERE when someone on the
phone said it was not company policy to fax inf.
Smile bend over and pay $25 for the manual.
THATS a bummer :-)

I have sucessfuly used my new digital camera to order
hard to describe parts. The reaction of the parts departments
was very good.

IF YOU DO NOT YET HAVE A DIGITAL CAMERA....
I will be uploading many immages over the next few days
to the ftp site that you may use for parts ident.

If you have a digital camera with a macro setting (Close Up)
Take a nice picture of the part.
(including enough area around part to show its location)
Use the highest resolution you can get from camera.

The trick now is to use the fax capability built into your
modem. I suggest a program such as Winfax 4 although you
can try the software that is usually provided with the modems.

UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS OF YOUR FAX SYSTEM

Fax (at least the kind in common use) can only transmit 2 colors.
Black or White they have no true greyscale capability!
If you attempt to print directly to your fax you end up with
large black and white areas that are useless.

Using Adobe Photoshop 4 we will need to prepare the image for faxing...

1. Load your image into photoshop

2. Using the (IMAGE) image dropdown menu
Select (MODE) then greyscale (strippimg the color inf)

3. Using the (IMAGE) image dropdown menu
Select (IMAGE SIZE) check off resample image
enter a width of 1728 pixels
(This is the full width of Fax images TRANSMITTED IN FINE MODE.

4. Next we will convert the file from 255 shades of grey to
     2 color image.
Using the (IMAGE) image dropdown menu
Select (MODE) then bitmap (converting the image to dithered B/W)
Use the same pixels per inch output as is shown for your input.
     Select difusion dither then OK.

At this point your picture will look a little bit rough but it will look
not bad if viewed at 25% size. You can now comment and save your
Faxable picture to disk,

Send a test copy to the shop fax machine from your computer.
DO NOT FORGET TO FAX ON FINE...

Demo file of this procedure will be uploaded today.
